In some states, such as Florida for example, almost all lawsuits are required to be mediated before a court will allow them to be put on the trial calendar. Florida has greatly reduced the trial docket of courts by using mediation to resolve about 75 percent of all cases.
In our more cost-conscious current economy, people are turning to mediation as a more affordable way to resolve conflict. Comparatively speaking, alternative dispute resolution might cost a few hundred dollars versus going to trial, which could cost well into the thousands of dollars.
